About “As Above, So Below”
Childhood friends to lovers, Iphis and Ianthe are finally engaged to be married, but Iphis has a secret: They were born as a girl, but raised as a boy to be protected from their femicidal father. Terrified of what will happen when their identity is discovered, Iphis seeks guidance from Artemis and Apollo, but they come to realize that even gods struggle in the face of love and heartbreak.
As Above, So Below is a reverse engineered musical revue drawing inspiration from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Greek mythology, and the poetry of Sappho. This indie/folk/rock musical combines movement and song in a celebration of queer joy that questions the trope of tragic queer love.
Character Descriptions
*vocal ranges somewhat flexible
Iphis (they/she): A nonbinary masc lesbian. Raised as a boy because their father would have killed them if he knew they were afab. She loves Ianthe but is scared that Ianthe will find out her gender, and that she is queer when they get married. They think Ianthe might not love them anymore if this is revealed.
Vocal part: Alto-Soprano
Ianthe (she/her): Iphis’ self-assured childhood best friend and fiance. Ianthe longs to be free from a controlling society and Iphis’ equally controlling parents. She wants to be with Iphis and is confused as to why Iphis is having doubts about their marriage.
Vocal part: Alto-Soprano
The Ghost of Hyacinthus (he/him): A spartan prince who falls in love with Apollo. He tragically died playing a game of discus. When Apollo could not save him he turned Hyacinthus into a flower. He is starting to question why their love story had to be tragic, and Apollo’s seeming acceptance of that.
Vocal part: Tenor
Apollo (he/him): God of the sun, healing, song, poetry, prophecy, music, and archery. Twin to Artemis. He falls in love with Hyacinthus, and immortalizes him as a flower when he cannot save the prince from death. He appears to show the possibility of queer love to Iphis but supplies his only instance of queer love-- a tragic story that Iphis questions by the end of the show.
Vocal part: Tenor
Artemis (she/her): Goddess of the hunt, wild animals, vegetation, and autonomy. Twin to Apollo. She is queer, and has decided to never marry. She is accompanied by nymphs who also take a vow to never marry, and be devoted only to her. Embodying queer joy, expansiveness, autonomy and freedom in the show. She acts as a guide and protector of Iphis throughout the show, and grows along side them.
